Golfing Breckenridge: A Paradise for Skill and Beauty

How many golf courses have you visited in a municipality that offers twenty-seven holes designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus? Unless you've been to the Breckenridge Golf Club, your answer is certainly "none." While eighteen holes were originally designed in 1985, the town opened another nine in 2001. This newer addition, also known as "The Elk Nine," contributed greatly to the course, giving golfers more elevation and even more breath-taking views of Breckenridge's surrounding beauty.

The Praise. National and regional honors have proven that the Breckenridge Golf Club is the premier course to visit on any trip to Colorado. The Colorado Golfer named Nicklaus' course both Best Mountain Course and Toughest Mountain Course. Additionally, Golf Digest awarded it with 4-1/2 stars in its "Places to Play" guide, and named it one of the top "Upscale Places to Play" in the nation.

Course Basics.

  • The High-Altitude Factor. So, what's so spectacular about this golf course, other than the designer? Let's start with the basics. If you claim yourself to be a golfer and have never played at high elevations, it's certainly something you must do if you want to keep any sort of golf credentials. With the clubhouse sitting just over 9,300 feet, the high elevation makes golf balls fly higher and straighter than those at low elevation due to less resistance in the air. Sound like a factor that could improve your golf game? It only gets better.
  • Perfect Golf Weather. Golf season temperatures are perfect for a day on the course. You won't sweat your way from hole to hole as you will in many other parts of the country because high elevation also means cooler temperatures. In the summer, temperatures average in the 70s, and rarely exceed 80 degrees. Bring a jacket and you'll enjoy spring and fall golfing in Breckenridge as well (spring averages are normally in the high 50s and fall months still boast days in the 60s).
  • Challenging Terrain. The course offers a challenge to even expert golfers. (It was designed by Jack Nicklaus, after all). Four sets of tees (each plays to a par of 72) let you pick your course, and therefore your difficulty level.
  • The Scenery. Perhaps the very best element of golfing Breckenridge is the backdrop. The Bear Nine puts you on the historic land that was once a tent city for Breckenridge miners in search of gold. Native grasses, wetlands, and views of both the Ten-Mile Range and the Breckenridge Ski Resort are also in stunning view on these holes. The narrow Beaver Nine also showcase remnants of the rock piles left behind by miners. Additionally, beaver ponds increase the difficulty of some holes here, but the view of Buffalo Mountain can help to ease your frustration. Finally, the widest panoramic views of Breckenridge's Ten-Mile Range are offered on the Elk Nine. The scenery also includes a lake and abundant bushes and greenery, working to increase your difficulty level while simultaneously providing eye candy.

Breckenridge really is a golfer's delight. If you're planning a trip to this premier mountain town, why not rent a Breckenridge condo or vacation home that will put you in close distance to the golf course that is sure to become your second home during your stay? When you combine perfect weather, a world-class course, and stunning views, there's really no question where you should plan your next golf outing.
